We live in a world that often seems to be speeding up, and it is all too easy for most of us simply to go with the flow. But there is a game-changing practice that allows us to take back control and live life on purpose: intentional living.
With intentionality, you can actually pave the way to a life that takes in account what you truly value. This is how you can change the course of your life using intentionality.
What is Intentional Living?
Living intentionally involves consciously making decisions that are consistent with what we claim to stand for and what we ultimately desire. To me, it is being intentional vs life just happening. Living intentionally means that you are not just the ball in a pinball machine bouncing from wall to obstacle; it is about choosing your path and being clear where you want your life to go.
The Role of Self-Discovery
Without understanding yourself on a deeper level, you may struggle to actually live intentionally. Finding yourself means figuring out what your beliefs, interests and weaknesses are. Causing you to ask yourself those difficult questions and being brutally honest with your answers.
What do you truly care about?
Where do you see yourself in the future?
What sort of person do you want to be?
As you can see, pondering these questions gives us a plan for how we want to aim in living our lives. It enables you to live your life according to what is most important and meaningful for you, which can create more satisfaction in the long term.
Visioning Your Future
One important pillar of intentional living is to build a vision about what the future will look like. It is like a north star that guides you when all the shit hits the fan in your life. Set the mind of what you want to achieve five, ten and twenty years from now. How do you want this ideal life of yours to show up? What are you doing? Who are you with?
Building this vision is not just about strategic planning but knowing exactly what you want from life. This process involves envisioning what your ideal life would look like and outlining the steps you need to take to build that. Having this vision will remind you of what you are working for and keep reminding you how to stay motivated and focused.
Setting Intentional Goals
Once you have a vision, it's time to focus on goals. SMART principles: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound goals. Most importantly should fit in or resonate with your vision and values.
For example, if your vision is to transition into a career where you can help other people, then your goals might include earning certain certifications or licenses and strategizing who from the industry you should develop relationships with while also getting as much hands-on experience on-the-job. Every end goal should fit perfectly into your overall vision, to ensure that you are working towards exactly what matters.
Embracing the Journey
It is not a destination but rather, living intentionally is an adventure. It takes patience and grit, a sense of being able to roll with the punches. There will be obstacles and setbacks you have to overcome as you chase your dreams of generational wealth. Yes, you did mess up; now use that as an opportunity to grow and learn. With every obstacle you conquer, you are lessening what is important to you, and moving closer towards a life that aligns with your wishes.
Living intentionally is an ongoing process; reevaluating and shifting priorities/tasks as you move through this journey. Life is not static, and you likely will have different visions as time passes. Flexibility keeps you in integrity with your fundamental beliefs while accommodating the shifts in the outer world.
Building a Support System
You need support if you want to live intentionally. Surround yourself with people who understand and support your vision. Having good friends, family or even a mentor can serve as an encouragement for feedback and accountability.
A coach can also be instrumental in this process. A coach keeps you on track towards your goals and shows the way when things get rough. They are a sanctuary for experimentation, where you learn to translate your intentions into action.
Coaching To Deepen Your Path of Intentional Living
As you go forth upon your journey to intentional living, remember all the wonderful things that can result from this type of relationship with a coach. Why should everyone have a coach? How can coaching be the means to achieve whatever it is you want out of life?
Here is how a Coach supports you in your journey;
Personal Coaching: Your coach develops a programme specifically tailored to you and your goals. Such a customized approach means that your objectives and methods are germane to the conditions which make your ascension towards success.
Safe Space: Coaching is a judgment-free zone which allows you to look at your thoughts and feelings without being critiqued. This space will allow you to confront your fears and insecurities while harboring a compassionate ally in the process.
Developing confidence and self-esteem: Coaching helps with quieting the inner critic, ensuring you overcome negative thoughts about yourself. Your confidence increases as you begin to understand your potential and what you can do, making it less difficult for you to make otherwise regrettable decisions in earlier stages of dedication.
Effective strategies that work: An experienced coach brings years of experience and an arsenal of proven winning methods to the table, yielding tangible results. These tactics are meant to help you succeed, whether moving through any of those phases or beyond.
Often we have the best of intentions when it comes to achieving our health goals, but ultimately time goes by and nothing changes.
