Love, the quintessential aspiration of life, often eludes us amidst our misconceptions and misunderstandings of its true essence. In our pursuit of love, we are frequently ensnared in a cycle of dysfunction within our daily lives and relationships.
Reflecting on my experiences in the tumultuous year of 2020, I’ve come to understand that genuine love, in its purest form, is one of the most challenging actions to extend, both to others and to oneself. Love transcends mere sentiment or affection; it demands a profound acknowledgment of the less-than-lovable aspects inherent in both others and ourselves.
Drawing inspiration from Don Miguel Ruiz’s perspective on love, I’ve navigated through a peculiar phase of transition in my life. Ruiz astutely observes that our understanding of love is often conditional, shaped by societal norms and expectations. We learn to love others and ourselves based on predefined conditions, perpetuating a cycle of approval-seeking and conformity.
Central to my journey has been the realization that unconditional love, devoid of expectations or demands, is not only understood but also imperative for genuine connection. However, extending unconditional love to others necessitates cultivating a similar attitude towards oneself—a love free from self-criticism, self-harm, and self-sabotage.
Through introspection and mindfulness, I’ve begun to discern the motives underlying my interactions and expressions of love.
Am I giving or receiving love with conditions, or am I capable of loving freely and unconditionally?
Am I truly nourishing my own sense of happiness and wholeness in the process?
Despite my efforts to prioritize self-love, I often find myself grappling with feelings of unworthiness and self-doubt, manifested in my reluctance to embrace vulnerability and reveal my authentic self. The fear of rejection and pain associated with exposing my true essence inhibits my ability to fully engage in acts of self-love.
Yet, even amidst this internal struggle, I recognize the importance of confronting and overcoming these barriers to self-love. Embracing vulnerability, acknowledging my worthiness, and fostering a compassionate relationship with myself are pivotal steps towards experiencing love in its truest form.
The Journey Through Loss and Grief
My journey through love and self-discovery has not been an easy one. In 2017, I faced one of the most challenging moments of my life with the loss of my beloved husband, Darrell. His passing left a void that seemed insurmountable. However, this profound loss also became a catalyst for my personal growth and transformation.
Darrell’s death forced me to reassess my priorities and embrace intentional living with renewed vigor. Amidst the waves of grief and reflection, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, seeking to honor his memory by living a life of purpose and fulfillment.
